FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND IMPORTANT FACTS TO CONSIDER BEFORE FINAL INSTALLATION
While the choices to be made for navigation equipment and electronics aboard is very important it is equally important to make sure they are installed correctly. The mounting system is often overlooked. Speaking specifically about the antenna, keep in mind that the radar requires a clear view of the horizon to function properly. Similarly if you are going to be mounting satellite phone or TV aboard, the antenna requires an unobstructed look sky ward to search out the many satellites available. All boat designs offer some unique challenges and the following questions need to be answered before final installation:
Q: Will you have a dodger or bimini top presenting an obstruction?
A: While the canvas is an important comfort feature aboard it cannot take on more importance than the performance of your navigation equipment. The radar scanner is going to have a blank spot if it comes across metal objects while scanning 360 degrees with its beam width and similarly the satellite dome will not read through anything solid impeding its skyward view. Electronics warranties have very specific information about the proper installation and usage of their product so read the fine print.
Q: If you are mounting to an existing radar arch is it above everyone’s head to insure microwaves are not zapping you from your scanner? Is it designed for easy installation with routing channels for wiring and room for backing plates or at least bolts and washers?
A: Remember some of the laws of physics when calculating this. If the antenna is 15-20 feet off the water and it weighs 25lbs and you could find yourself going 15-20 knots into a pitching sea the stress load and effect on your mounting system are quite significant. Is your mount strong enough? Does the arch have camber fore and aft built in? Do the outboard ends taper down closer to the sheer lines? If so you might need wedges to compensate to keep your antenna’s level.
Q: What other electronic accessory items will you want to add? Can you integrate other items into your mounting system to reduce the number of holes drilled and simplify your installation?
A: Ask yourself whether you can incorporate your GPS antenna, your Sat-com or Sat TV mounted with the radar. Other items to consider are deck light, VHF etc. Finally the Coast Guard requires that your all around navigation light be higher than this other equipment. Many of these things can be fitted to the same mast or mounting system if planned for.
Finally, when considering all this, remember that looks are important too. Does the mount system complement the styling of your boat and will it be a lasting investment that enhances the resale? Once these factors are considered and planned for then you can achieve maximum performance with your electronics and still have something with elegant looks that also complements the styling of your yacht.
